Pictures of Donnington Castle

a Castle in the town of Donnington, in the county of Berkshire

About Donnington Castle

A mile north of Newbury. Built in the late 14th century as a fortified residence at the top of a hill, overlooking the River Lambourne. Only part left standing is the most impressive Gatehouse which dates back to 1386.
At the beginning of the Civil War (date??) the Castles last resident, John Packer had it snatched away by the Royalist forces. It was then entrusted to Colonel John Boys by Charles I. Colonel Boys set about building an outer defence after realising the walls were too thin. In 1644 the castle was solidly defended during a massive 20 month bombardment and eventually, after four of its towers were in ruins, the Castle was taken by the Parliamentarians. The former owner John Packer then reclaimed his former residence but all that was left is what you see today, the gatehouse, after parliament had already given the go ahead for it to be demolished. Surrounded by impressive earthworks and some low remaining walls, Donnington Castle remains is still an impressive sight.
